About A Sheetz Near Me

Introduction

Sheetz, Inc. is an American chain of coffee shops and convenience stores run by the Sheetz family. The stores are stocked with special food items, beverages, and other items from convenience stores and have provided 24/7 services since the late 1980s. The majority of them offer gasoline. A few of them have full-scale truck stops with showers and laundromats. Sheetz’s headquarters are situated in Altoona, Pennsylvania, with stores across Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, Ohio, Virginia, and North Carolina.

Sheetz History

1952-1995

Sheetz, Inc. was established through G. Robert “Bob” Sheetz in 1952 when he bought one of the five dairy stores owned by his father situated in Altoona. In 1961, Bob hired his brother Steve to work for him part-time.

In 1963 the second store was inaugurated 1963 under the name “Sheetz Kwik Shopper.” A third store opened in 1968. After 1969 Steve was appointed general manager. The brothers planned to expand by an additional store every year and aimed to open seven stores by the year 1972.

The company was established in 1972. The firm increased its size from seven to 14 stores. The following year, Sheetz began selling gasoline and opened the first self-serve gasoline pumps in central Pennsylvania. The year was 1981 when Bob quit, and Steve was named the president. In 1983, Bob, as well as Steve, was opening 100 stores.

1995-2013

In 1995 Stanton R. “Stan” Sheetz, Bob’s son, was elected president, and Steve took over the role of Chairman of the Board. Currently, Sheetz maintains a family business with four family members on the executive committee.

In the mid-1990s, Sheetz sold It! Cola, the chain’s private label brand of soft drinks, was removed. It was sold in bottles, and cans, as fountain drinks, and the fountains were replaced with Pepsi products. The company now offers both Pepsi and Coca-Cola products in its fountains.

Then, in September 2001, Sheetz inaugurated a distribution centre in Claysburg, Pennsylvania.

The retailer, in December of 2004, started offering the brand new Sheetz MasterCard PayPass, which was equipped with RFID and was one of the first retailers to take the technology, before McDonald’s, Arby’s, CVS and the rival 7-Eleven, All of which launched it in the year 2006 across the country.

On July 10, 2006, Sheetz became Pennsylvania’s second retailer chain to provide E85 ethanol-based fuel alternatives at certain stations.

In 2008, Sheetz inaugurated its first commissary 2008, Sheetz Bros. Kitchen, which produces fresh bakery items and sandwiches at Sheetz stores.

In 2011, Sheetz was a national hit 2011 when it was an important sponsor for Morgan Spurlock’s feature film POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold. Sheetz actively promoted the film at its stores, selling collector cups. Altoona even switched its brand name “POM Wonderful Presents the Greatest Movie Ever Sold, Pennsylvania” for $25,000. This name alteration was only symbolic since it was not legally altered to reflect the United States Board of Geographic Names or acknowledged in The United States Postal Service.

2013-Present

In October of 2013, Stan Sheetz became chairman of the Board of Sheetz and his brother Joseph S. “Joe” Sheetz became the president and CEO of Sheetz.

In November of 2013, The book Kenneth W. Womack Made to Order: The Sheetz Story traces the company’s background from its dairy store’s beginnings up to the present.

The year 2014 was the time that Sheetz inaugurated its 2nd kitchen and distribution center located in Burlington, North Carolina. In the fiscal year of 2018-2019, sales were $7.5 billion.

On November 29 and November 29, 2019, Sheetz announced an expansion to Columbus, Ohio starting in 2021. Then, in January of 2021, Sheetz created a site, SheetzIsComing.com, that was designed to help prepare for the Columbus opening and launch digital billboards that would announce the arrival of the store as becoming a sponsor of the local CBS affiliate WBNS TV’s newscasts. When Sheetz officially arrives in the area, it will be accompanied by the opening of two stores located in Delaware on April 20, 2021

On December 19 2019, Sheetz opened their 600th retail store in Shaler Township, PA. Sheetz now has more than 600 stores throughout Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio and North Carolina, and more than 21,000 employees. All Sheetz stores are company-owned and operated.

The year 2020 was the time when Sheetz ended their sale of Faygo soft drinks and replaced them with their brand new private-label brand called Sheetz Pop! It replaces It! Cola, 25 years after the former product was shut down.

Food Service at Sheetz

In 1986, to boost sales that were falling, Earl Springer, the manager of Sheetz store in Williamsport, Maryland, pursued an idea for food that would later be Sheetz’s signature Made To Order (MTO) line. In the beginning, only sandwiches submarine Customers would fill in small pieces of paper, indicating the ingredients they would like to put on their sandwich and the quantity they wanted. The order slip would be placed in a container, while the cooks would make the sandwich to suit the customer’s order.

Since then, the menu was expanded and by the early 1990s, MTO was the leading salesperson for Sheetz. In 1996, the paper-based ordering system was discarded to make way for a picture-based touchscreen system. It is used in many restaurants and gas stations worldwide; Sheetz was the first company to use this technology.

In 1999 Sheetz sold 10,000 units of MTO per day. Sheetz is now training employees to be baristas in their latest line of “Sheetz Bros. Coffee”, designed to provide higher-quality coffee than the typical one found at convenience shops. With the launch of the “Convenience Restaurant “Convenience restaurant” concept, they’ve increased their menu. Customers can choose from an assortment of foods. It also has an Espresso Bar, offering specialty coffees at all locations. Sheetz often provides customers complimentary beverages during Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Between 2008 and 2009, Sheetz rolled out “MTGo! ” which is a pack-and-go of wraps, sandwiches, and other small items for the fast-paced customer. In addition to “MTGo! “, Sheetz unveiled “Shweetz Bakery” items, which include muffins, fritters, doughnuts and fritters that are made and delivered every day by”the “Sheetz Bros. Kitchen” located in Claysburg, Pennsylvania.

Food-Only Stores

In 2003 Sheetz established a new concept store inside the food court at Hanes Mall in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The store offered Sheetz’s custom-made food and fountain drinks in a more conventional fast food style. The store was not a convenience store. The store is now closed.

In 2012, Sheetz again began contemplating “new concept” and “fuel-free” locations. In 2014, plans were revealed to open one within the grounds of West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. The plan was to name the store “Sheetz MTO Market”, but when it was opened in February of 2015, the store was renamed “Sheetz Cafe” (although outdoor signage is identical to the other locations).

In September 2015, a second no-fuel café launched in State College, Pennsylvania, close to the main campus at Pennsylvania State University. The cafe is located in Indiana, Pennsylvania, on the western border with Indiana University of Pennsylvania, which is located on the Indiana University of Pennsylvania campus of the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, an old Sheetz which previously served gasoline was removed and replaced by a non-fuel cafe, which was opened in August of 2016. The fourth location of this type opened in September of 2017 in Charlottesville, Virginia, directly across the street from the campus of the University of Virginia.

In September, Sheetz announced they would not renew their lease with WVU for the Morgantown location. The company did not offer any reason as to why the location would be closing. On May 20, 2021, Sheetz stated that their Charlottesville facility would be shut down in June.

Sale of alcohol in Pennsylvania

From June 8 to June 8, 2016, Pennsylvania state law forbade the sale of alcohol in convenience stores. The sale of beer had to occur at a distributor for beer, and liquor was to be sold through state-owned stores named “Wines and Spirits”.

The year 2007 was the first time Sheetz attempted to discover an escape route around this by defining a portion of one of their store’s prototypes situated in Altoona in the state of Pennsylvania as being a restaurant that would allow the sale of alcohol. In response, the Malt Beverage Distributors Association of Pennsylvania protested, and Sheetz was temporarily banned from selling beers. After a hearing, Sheetz was awarded the license to sell beer and continues to sell beer today.

On June 15, 2009, it was announced that the Pennsylvania Supreme Court granted Sheetz the authority to sell takeaway beer with the condition that it’s also accessible for consumption at the location. Sheetz led the charge to alter the law on alcohol sales in Pennsylvania to permit sales at grocery and convenience stores, which was enacted when Governor Tom Wolf signed Act 39 into law on June 8, 2016.

Sheetz Fuel

The Sheetz stores which sell gasoline have three gasoline grades (87, 89, and 93-octane), and most also offer a diesel. A growing number of stores also sell E85 and E15, and some provide ethanol-free gasoline. Certain stores also sell kerosene at separate pumps.

Sheetz is well-known for its high fuel sales, mostly due to strong inside sales of its MTOs and other products that contribute to purchases at the pump. Sheetz is the market’s top seller of all fuels in Pennsylvania at more than 21%, ahead of other competitors. Convenience stores, including those that sell the fuel of Big Oil brands such as Exxon, Sunoco, and BP, have a significant presence in Pennsylvania, along with Sheetz.
